The first great History in the history of Western Civilization. You can really understand all the events of the ancient world by reading this book. It's a pretty easy book to read, if you like history, full of anecdotes; and it really helps put the rivalry between the Greek and the Persians into perspective. If you read this before Rufus' History of Alexander you'll have a greater appreciation for the enormity of Alexander's victory, but I still think it best to read about Alexander first so that you have more surprises as you read Rufus' version, and then read Herodotus' more condensed version. This book isn't the exciting page turner type of book that a lot of the other books in this list are, but it has much interesting information on the ancient world of the Greeks and is never boring. |
